It all started in Pudasjärvi, a town in Northern Finland. After several projects, Altti Veteläinen (vocals & bass) and Jarmo Puolakanaho (guitars) started Eternal Tears of Sorrow in May ‘94 with Olli-Pekka Törrö (who left the band in early ’99). The band recorded two promo tapes that year and they gave the band what they had wanted: a record deal. So, the first album SINNER'S SERENADE was recorded in summer ’96 by Ahti Kortelainen in the near-legendary Tico-Tico Studios - like every album ever since.
The second album, VILDA MÁNNU, was recorded next year. The new record company was Spinefarm Records, who released the album late ‘98. The significance of melodies and harmonies had increased drastically, with atmospheres varying from black metallish rage to beautiful moods.
The third album, released in Finland in the early 2000, was to be called CHAOTIC BEAUTY. The name tells it all: The melodies of the album are extremely beautiful - but from time to time the general mood of the album gets rather chaotic.
In addition to the Tico-Tico production, Mikko Karmila (known from his work with Stratovarius, Avantasia, Edguy, Waltari, Children of Bodom, Nightwish etc.) mixed the album. Chaotic Beauty received brilliant reactions all over the world. In October-November 2000 the band supported Nightwish on their European tour that consisted of 27 gigs in 9 countries. After enjoying the success of Chaotic Beauty, it was time to create something new. Their third album A VIRGIN AND A WHORE was released in October 2001.
Now, after a five year break, EtoS is back, wholly renewed. After getting back together in 2005 and reforming their line-up, the band started the recordings of their most bombastic and harmonious album yet, BEFORE THE BLEEDING SUN.
With new members Risto Ruuth (guitar) and Janne Tolsa (keyboards) aboard, and with the added backup from session musicians Jarmo Kylmänen, Miriam Renvåg (Ram-Zet), Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica) and Marco Hietala (Nightwish & Tarot), Eternal Tears of Sorrow have reached whole new heights, giving new meanings to melodic death metal.
